Has anyone worked out the local resistance to the ID card trial yet?

why us?

and why would anyone pay £60 for the privilege of giving personal biometric data to the government?

If the police are destroying large amounts of DNA information on innocent people, why are the government now charging us to get it back??

What I can't decipher is this comment:

"ID cards will deliver real benefits to everyone, including increased protection against criminals, illegal immigrants and terrorists"

How, exactly? Are terrorists going to have a special red card with 'Terrorist' written on it so you can identify them easily? And if so, how would you get them to voluntarily purchase one for £60?

Does the card come with a personal force field so if attacked by a Terrorist or, horrors, an *illegal immigrant*, you'll be able to use the card to become bulletproof?

Are illegal immigrants really plotting to murder us in our beds or has the home secretary been reading the Daily Mail again?

What are the other benefits implied by this statement? Cheap bus fares? Lower fuel taxes? Job security? None of the above? In fact, are there any actual benefits at all?

I'm at a loss to understand why anybody would be in favour of it.
